[Letter from [undecipherable] Leacock / 13th May 1797]
Colt Hodgdon.
Sir Colt Gurney one of the Legislature of this State appointed in conjunction with David Rittenburgh & Gen. Proctor to adjust my Pendulum proof, advises me to apply to Colt Hodgdon immediately for his permission to look over the book in which Mr. Miffersmith noted the various proofs of powder lately taken by him, in order through the kindness of Colt Hodgdon to obtain three or four Samples from 60 yards to an hundred & Colt Gurney is anxious to try my machine in his Store previous to going out to adjust it: or perhaps some mistake might happen, which for my Sake he declares he Should be exceeding Sorry for, as he believes my invention merits adoption –
On my own account Sir, I now entreat this indulgence – I have grown old – afflicted in body – I have thro' the Ravages of fire lost 3 thousand pound the whole earnings of my youthful days – this world at present is a gloomy one to me – no other alternative left except this little office to Support me – I fain would hope your compassion & sensibility may be excited to grant me this request; & I Shall ever remember the kindness with gratitude – With great respect I am dear Sir yours, &c
