[Docket/address page: Marietta / William Simmons Esquire / Accountant / to the department of War / Philadelphia; notations upper right: Bellefpr near Marietta / [undecipherable] 1797 / [undecipherable] Jan[undecipherable] / Answ[undecipherable]; [seal]] Bellefpor Near Marietta May 5^th 1797 Sir Yours of the first of April was received a few days since — I have to observe upon your Statement of my account which was annexed, that so far as it respects my pay and subsistance it is right; provided there is a receipt against me for any pay for the month of October 1791, which I am inclin'd to think there is not but only charged against me with the money advanced to replace the sum I lost. The 40 dollars deficiency in Cap^tn Brills and Theron's pay[undecipherable] of my company to me, which appears from the receipts exhibited must be considered as a charge against me on your books; but am in hopes to have it settled when I see them — Likewise the 288 dollars and 25 6^cts must be considered as a charge if Congress [undecipherable] not in cause to allow it to me; amounting in the whole to 322 Dol^rs 25 cents, agreeably to your account transmitted to me. I have received pay and subsistance to the last of May 1796 only — have not been able to ascertain when my pay ceases, or the price of rations at Pittsburg and Cincinnati, for to make an average for this place, this I have used every exertion to obtain it, nor can I learn whether Congress has rejected the prayer of my petition or not — Do Sir oblige me so far as to inform me in these particulars, and whether the months account of money advanced for what was lost, and be obliged I shall transmit my account for settlement without loss of time, and you will render me all obligations your obliged hum^l Serv^t William Simmonds Esquire Jon^a Haskell
