Fort Johnston North Carolina, 1^st May 1797 Sir Yours dated 17^th February, I received about the middle of April, & have given Colo. Read, Receipts, for the Pay mentioned. Inclosed I send you Muster & Pay Rolls, for the Months of February, March, & April.— I have, two or three times, forwarded to you, my accounts against the U. States; but have never, received the least Syllable in Answer.— I have lately got Part of it, from Mess.^rs Potts & Gibbs— Among their Accounts you'll observe, three Provision Returns, assigned by Capt. Griffith J. McRee— which was for Rations I furnished last Year— & will be found to correspond, with my Account in your Office, where the rest of [my] vouchers on the U. S. are or ought to be.— — With your last Letter I received one from Col. Rochefontaine informing me, that, that he had wrote you, concerning my Account, & desir-ing it might be examined, & what ever balance was found due me, to be Transmitted.— Probably my Vouchers are deemed insufficient, & so, I shou'd be greatly obliged, by information, how I might make a more effectual Application.
