Cap^t Alex^r Thompson Accountants Office of the Artillerists & Engineers April 27^th 1797 West Point Sir [Duplicate sent him May 20 & also another letter on the same subject – see page 65 –] The Accountant wrote you the 24^th February last requesting you to forward the Receipt Roll of your Company up to 30^th September 1794 for which you stand charged with One Hundred Ninety seven Dollars Forty the amount of said Roll, since that date none of your Letters have come to hand. In the absence of the Accountant; herewith transmit you a Statement of your Account current; by which it appears there is due to the United States by you the sum of Three Hundred ninety two Dollars and fifty four Cents, which arises principally from the money paid you for the Recruiting Service and the aforesaid [sum] of One hundred Ninety seven Dollars and forty Cents — The charge of twenty Dollars made by you for expences of a Witness attending the Supreme Court of New York on your behalf at present is suspended and will remain so untill a final settlement of your account takes place here; this charge will be submitted to the Secretary of War with any explanation that you may deem necessary to make: in the Interim you will please on receipt of this inform me as early as convenient the result of any examination which may take place with view on the account and forward the remaining Vouchers that the same may be closed by refunding the balance to the Treasurer — The charge of thirty two Dollars the [pay of] Deserters and for which you have no Receipts cannot be admitted.
