Sir
In the absence of the accountant I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17 Inst. inclosing the different Vouchers therein expressed, and from which your Account Current has been stated, and after Crediting you with the amount of them, leaves a balance against you of 76 Dollars, which deducted from the Six months Pay and Subsistence allowed you by the Act of 3d March 1797 leaves a Balance in your favor of 348100, which has been paid to Major Stagg agreeably to your request.
I return you inclosed your letter for Lieutt Smith as there is no probability of his returning here before he joins the Army.
I am &c.
