[Private] Philad. 7 June 1797. (Private) Dear Sir. I recd. your letter of the 5th Inst. by to days mail and hasten to answer it. The latest [strikethrough: formal] account received by [strikethrough: Government] of [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] your enquiry is a [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [undecipherable] Mr. King, dated London F.by 6, in which the [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] says that [undecipherable] Sands of New York had shewn him a letter he had just received from Mr. Pitcairn, dated Paris Jany 28 [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] the [strikethrough: [undecipherable]], that Gen. Pinckney was been orderd by the directory to leave Paris, and that he would depart for Amsterdam on tuesday the 31 ulto. [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] adds, that he entertains no doubt of the authenticity of this very unpleasant intelligence. By previous letters from Gen Pinckney, one dated in January [strikethrough: [undecipherable]], [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] that the Directory had [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [undecipherable] to receive him; that he wrote to de La Croix for a card of protection [which was [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] denied, and that [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] gave him to understand [strikethrough: [undecipherable]], [that] he would be de La Croix [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] him [from?] that he would be exposed to the police [officers?] [should?] he [undecipherable] in Paris. [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] [undecipherable] imply [undecipherable] that it would in my opinion be very unsafe for you to hazard any thing of consequence bottomed upon such letters as that you have given me an extract from, in opposition to [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] above intelligence; and very dangerous to entertain a hope, that the Directory would be more coming to Gen P. after hearing of their successes in Italy, than they had been before those events.
