Note
Extract enclosed in Stagg to Hodgdon, 05/25/1797. There is a second extract -- seemingly from this same document -- in McHenry and Hodgdon to Harris, 05/18/1797. The two extracts were drawn from different portions of the original document but the tone and subject matter suggests that they are drawn from a single document. The extract in the 05/18/1798 letter indicates that the document was addressed to McHenry.
