[1]8] Sir Alexandria 1^st April 1797 Yours of the 30^th Ulto came to hand last evening. where your mention that I stand charged with monies Received in 1792 and 93 on Account of my own pay and that of a detachment, and for contingencies of marching it to Pittsburgh. This Surprises me exceedingly for I had no idea that there was any [undecipherable] against me in the Books of your office never having received any thing therefor — nor do I know what Monies I have received but what has been regularly accounted for my Monthly pay was always [undecipherable] for in a regular manner which [undecipherable] forwarded to the Office and [undecipherable] annually — I received money [undecipherable] from Major Rudolph for the above [purpose?] which was all regularly accounted for and [attested?] from May and from the detachment at [Head?] — At [Legionville?] the receipt of the men for their pay on marching from the [undecipherable] [undecipherable] was given to [undecipherable] who commanded the Company, and [these?] bills in the Books of the company; those receipts must be in the [undecipherable] [office?] I recollect the men have regularly served their term and been discharged — if I knew the [sum?] Received and for what perhaps I could account for it. I have always been extremely particular of any public Money that has been given to me, and regularly appropriated it the contingent money.
