In reply to your letter of the 7th Inst. I have to inform you that the Balance which appears due by you to the United States on statement of your account is three hundred and twenty eight dollars and twenty five Cents, which is Two Hundred and twenty one dollars and 9 Cents less than it appeared in the account forwarded you under date 31st January last, having since given you Credit for Pay and Subsistence to 31st December 1791 as annexed. Should this Balance, which includes the sum lost by you and which cannot be allowed at this Office, without the special interposition of Congress, agree with your accounts, I request you will immediately inform me that the necessary entries may be made in the Books of this Office, which have hitherto been omitted by the late Paymaster General.
