Pittsburg 24 March 1797
Sir
I have received your letters of the 6th & 9th instant. The former by the hand of Doctor Peter respecting a claim of the Militia of Gallipolis for rations of provisions and Whiskey during the time of their services under the orders of the Secretary of War. By that letter I have obtained a Copy of the Secretary of War's Orders, dated 17th July 1795 for calling into the service of the United States at that post two Serjeants, two Corporals & 20 Privates under the command of Captain D'Hebecourt, also a Copy of an Order for disbanding that Corps dated 25th Feby 1796. By which I am enabled to make a settlement with Captain D'Hebecourt from the Commencement of Service of that Corps, under the orders of the 17th July, to wit, from the 10th of August 1795 to the 10th of February 1796 only, but it is said by Doctor Peter, who is authorised to settle the Ravings, that the Militia of Gallipolis were in the service of the United States under a former Order of the Secretary of War & therefore claim a compensation for provisions & not furnished to them previous to the 10th of August 1795 — I have therefore to request information on that subject as early as possible.
The building of Barracks at Presque Isle shall be postponed as you have directed.
I am Sir
