enclose to you— you will thusly observe that this payment is intended to commence on the 1^st Nov^r 1798 & end on the 31^st March 1799— the period first mentioned is that to which it is expected you have funds sufficient to pay the Troops— If you have not yet placed the money in the hands of the Paymasters and it should be expedient to do it before the Regiments march so as to pay them in full to the 31 October 1798 and with this payment compleat their pay to 31 March 1797— I hope you will lose no time in doing it— This however must depends entirely on the place where you are when this reaches you as the Troops are ordered to march without delay. I mention those circumstances as you must be well aware of the preference that I would give to the Troops being paid by you in full to their being paid in the quarter they are ordered to march— as the length of time would be great before resources could be forwarded to them from this place. This you will however be pleased to observe is not intended to interfere with their marching orders. If you should be present on Gen^l Wilkinson's arrival and receive the money he carries from here there is no occasion for me to mention the necessity of correctly noting the period to which each Officer & Soldier has been paid previous to this settlement as I am confident you will use your endeavours to arrange the business in proper order— you will in this case forward on a list of the Paymasters Rolls to this Office immediately that I may ascertain for what period the Troops have, tay use them— to be paid on their arrival in Georgia— I request you to write me immediately on receipt of this letter— I have forwarded
