" Sir
" The Surveyor General having been instructed, by the Secretary of the Treasury, to run the unascertained outlines of the lands lying North West of the River Ohio, and above the mouth of the River Kentucky agreeably to the treaty with Major General Wayne of the 3d August 1795 and having requested a military escort to cover the Surveyors while running the said lines; and that a few of the chiefs of the Indians interested may attend the running and marking the same; you will be pleased, on the application of the Surveyor General and information when and where the survey is to commence, to direct an escort, suitable to the purpose, to attend at the time and place fixed on, with orders to assist in marking the exterior line aforesaid, and will also take measures to procure the attendance of such of the Indian Chiefs, as may render the operation satisfactory to the Indians and safe to the Surveyors and Party.
