Fort Hamilton, March 17^th 1796 (Continued The Indians continue their Old custom of stealing horses and have almost Strip'd the Inhabitants of that neighbourhood from the a Month of this Season to Gregory's Station near the [undecipherable] two nights ago eleven were taken off from the Spring by [Paddle? Moore's?] I have Men in purs[uit] of them. I have a Delaware Indian several days in confinement in consequence of which, many horses are [undecipherable] from his [undecipherable] I am led to believe that it is the Shawnees Indians that do the most of this Mischief, the people are growing impatient and I am not without my fears that injury will be done the Indians if an immediate Stop is not put to this growing evil — I am also informed that the Shawanese are otherwise troublesome to the inhabitants and threaten to take off the Tommahawks [and] if not restrain'd by their [chiefs] shall not be surprized to hear of a Murder being committed by them — I have the honor to be &c.
