[Vol 32 No 44] [L] T D March 17^th 1797 Agreeably to what was concerted between us this morning, I have written to the Surveyor General informing him that the unascertained outlines of the Lands lying North West of the River Ohio & above the mouth of the River Kentucky in which the titles of the Indian Tribes have been extinguished by the Treaty with General Wayne on the 3^d of August 1795, are to be run under his direction. — The Surveyor General is instructed to inform General Wilkinson when & where [strikethrough: the proposed Surveys are to commence] & that the General will have orders from you to furnish an escort & to take measures for conveying such number of Indians as shall be thought proper, & that the expenses of the Escort & Indians will be defrayed by the Dept of War. — I have also stated that the Escort will be directed to assist in marking the line in a proper manner. I have now the honor to request that such Instructions may issue from your Department as will comport with intimations to the Surveyor General as aforementioned.
