John Hopkins Esq^t Accountants Office Commiss^r of loans — March 22^d 1797 Richmond Virginia Sir In answer to your letter of the 10^th Febru^y last, I have to inform you that on enquiry at the Treasury, find that you were charged with the money received at this Office as stated in my letter of the 27^th January last; and agreeably to a Certificate received from thence, and which was omitted to be forwarded before, that you was held accountable for the same there, your account will accordingly be closed on the Books of this Office. On enquiry this Team proves to be Public Property, I have therefore thought it adviseable to deduct such of the charges as are introduced in his accounts here as illegal, and have noted it opposite to the sums, as the major part of the charges are embraced in accounts settled at the Treasury— I forward the amount to you for your government— I am &c.
