Sir
I have received your letter of the 15 Inst. inclosing the Pay Roll for the Month of January 1797 of the Corps of Artillerists & Engineers stationed at West Point, from which a deduction of five dollars has taken place from the Pay of John Hews who has been made up as an artificer. If the Commandant will refer to the respective indentations of the officers of the Corps he will find that [undecipherable] have never been considered as artificers. The balance being 58 Dollars you will receive as usual from Nicholas Fish Esqr on giving him the necessary Receipts.
I am &c.
