United States Loan Office State of Virg^a February 10^th 1797 Sir I received your Letter of the 27^th Ult^o — by the mail which arrived here yesterday. You are correct in stating that I received in the Year 1790 by direction of the Secretary of the Treasury the sum of Twenty two thousand two hundred and thirteen dollars and 51⁶ Cents, for the purpose of discharging arrears of pay & subsistence due to the Officers Non-Commissioned Officers & Privates of the late Virginia Line — But I certainly never received any instructions to transmit the accounts & Vouchers to your Office for adjustment — on the Contrary I was expressly directed to render them to the Treasury for this purpose, which has long since been done, and a settlement thereof has taken place; except on an account and Vouchers in this respect lately transmitted, which I presume is in a Course of adjustment. The balance remaining unpaid upon the balances due to the late Virginia Line, as appears by my return rendered to the Treasury under date the 1^st January last is, Five Thousand Seven Hundred and twenty four Dollars & 62 Ninetieths, as may be further occurring to the amount and return last mentioned. I presume it is not intended that an account is to be rendered by me to your office, as well as to the Treasury.
