[2^d] On the first of September 1788 I succeeded a Matis Lemingson in the Military Hospital of the Southern Department but had been in actual Service from the Time of Buferd defeat and continued in the Service of the United States, under said appointment untill the conclusion of the war for which Services I am not think myself as yet sufficiently compensated in the State of North Carolina liquidated my accounts but allowed Me no lands, as I was not under the State Establishment. I find that Congress did in the 23^d of September 1788 make some provision for the Medical staff granting them a portion of Western Lands but the Substance of that Resolution I never could inform myself of, as whether it would include Me. Now My D^r Sir the Object of this letter is to request you to make enquiry at the proper Office (which I take to be the War Office) Whether or not I am entitled to a Warrant and for what quantity and what I may expect to sell it for at Philadelphia in actual cash, also how I am to proceed to obtain said Warrant. I am sorry to impose this task upon you as I doubt not but you are sufficiently engaged otherwise, but if you can devote as much time as will be necessary to obtain the information required and transmit it to me by the earliest Opportunity, you will lay me under infinite obligations —— We have had a warm Election for President and the Parties appear to have been pretty equally divided. I confess I am disappointed from My knowledge of the Men Jefferson was my choice, but perhaps things are best as they are. In all those great Political Transactions I feel an anxious concern untill the Event is over and if the Issue has turned up contrary to my inclination I prudently acquiesce, and swung with the Multitude. —— My State of Health is bad I am just emerging from a severe fit of the Plurisy.
