Agreeably to the request expressed in your letter of the 23^d. instant, I now transmit enclosed a Certificate from the Register, by which it appears that Samuel Hodgdon has been credited on the books of the Treasury, for the sum of one thousand dollars being part of monies advanced to him on account of the Quarter Master Department and which (with further sums) was paid over to John Wilkins Quar=ter Master General. and that out of the sums so receiv= by the D^r master General, he has paid to Captain John Heth for conducting Indians to Philadelphia the said sum of one thousand dollars, [undecipherable] for the expenditure of which have been exhibited to you for liquidation. It will therefore be proper that the said Samuel Hodgdon should be debited for this money in the Books of your Office and that he should not be exonerated from such charge, by placing the amount thereof to the debit of the Quarter Master General, until he shall pro=duce to you a voucher for monies paid by him to the said D^r master General, amounting to at least one thousand Dollars, on which you are requested to note that M^r. Hoogdon has received credit for that sum on the Books of your Office; which note is to bear your Signature. It will readily occur to you, that this precaution will be necessary, as otherwise, in a subsequent Settlement at the Treasury with M^r. Hodgdon, of monies advanced him on account of the Quarter Master Department, when doubtless he will exhibit vouchers on which credits will be demanded, [undecipherable] Draughts or bills which have been drawn on him by the said Quarter Master General, and paid; a future credit (if it should not other=wise appear from the Vouchers so presented) might be passed for the sum now in Question.
