Accountants Office Jan^y 16^th 1797 I certify that Samuel Hodgedon Superintendent of Stores has exhibited to this Office Sundry accounts & vouchers for payments made by him between the 1^st July 1796 and 31^st Dec^r following, which I have examined & find amount to Two thousand two hundred sixty nine Dollars ⁵²⁄₁₀₀ including charges for the rent of his own Stores, and for Sundry payments made by him for disbursements not properly within the Contingencies of the War Department, several of which appear more immediately connected with the Accounts of other Departments & should of right be settled at the Treasury, but as M^r Hodgedon's appointment will not warrant his making any further payments to be settled at this Office, I therefore submit to the Sec^y of War whether in the present instance it would not be proper to approve of the Account as rendered by M^r Hodgedon, and let the whole be charged to the Contingencies of the War Department without separating the Vouchers, and that in future he may be directed to refer any claim against this Department immediately here for settlement, that the accounts may all be entered under their proper heads of expenditures without his interfering & making the advances.
