Supplies for Indians
Document 1797Articles to be furnished to Indian chiefs, per McHenry's request. Craig reported Indians and interpreters were staying at post and that they were forbade from imbibing in drink. Commissioners to be paid.
Pittsburg 13th January 1797 Sir I have received your letters of the 6th instant . . I shall pay attention to these Contents. The articles you mention shall be furnished to the Indian Chiefs, they are now in very comfortable Quarters &with which they are perfectly satisfied. At their Arrival Irequested the Interpreters not to indulge the Indians in strong drink & Ihave not yet seen any of them intoxicated. Captain Shaumbourgh left this place on the 8th instant for Fort [partial char.] Washington by land . Your letter addressed to him covering Commissions for two Indian Chiefs agreeable to direction I have opened Ishall hand to these chiefs their Commissions immediately after the departure of the post.
