Capt Thomas Thompson having been appointed to take charge of the Materials provided for the Frigate building by Mr Hackett, and to Superintend the building and Equipment of the same, renders it necessary for me to inform you, that your appointment by Mr Fox as a Temporary Inspector of that Frigate is become void —
you will therefore on the receipt of this letter resign your Station together with all papers you may have in your possession relative to that Ship to Capt Thompson who will give you his receipt for the same, which you are directed to transmit to this Office with your account for payment —

As the safety and preservation of the Timber and other Materials deposited in the Navy Yard at Portsmᵒ. are of great importance to the United States and placing due confidence in your strict attention toward their general Security, I therefore propose to allow you Four Hundred Dollars P Annum as a full compensation for taking charge of all property belonging to the United States in that Navy Yard, your rate of pay to commence on the first of January 1797 —
If the above proposal meets your [strikethrough: acceptance] you will immediately acquaint me with your acceptance.
It will be expected that you will pay great attention to the Timber and other property put under your care, See they are properly protected from the weather, and that no part be taken away without orders from the Secretary of War for that purpose —
