West point January 9^th 1797 Sir, Mr Drancy in returning yesterday to the Garrison has brought from New York your letter of the 7^th Ultimo, left in the Contractors office after the Package was forwarded to me. it contained the two returns of Store that have & to Genearalize whenever you will Order to me or to the Quarter Master of this Corps. The Invoice of Goods forwarded to the Detachment of this Corps for their Provisions, had Charged to the corps at large. I will make it my business to have the same charged on the books kept here, and an account of Division by the Commanding officer will be required, in order to show it upon the General returns, which we will give you when required or at stated times, as you will Perceive, had to account for things which we have never heard of is utterly impossible. I am writing to all the officers Commanding detachments to find here the returns you wish for of Damage and every Species of Stores in their possession, and as Soon as possible a good return will be made to you.
