[Wm Polk Esqr / Supt. — Charlotte / North Carolina] Accountants Office
Jany 16th 1797
Sir
I duly rec'd your letter of the 15th Nov. on the subject of Ensign Polk's account; in answer to which I have to inform you, that on a reference to Capt. Montfort's Accounts (who was the Commanding Officer at Halifax) I find he has a Credit for the Bounty & Premium for Inlisting those men mentioned in your letter to have been Inlisted by Ensign Polk; and that the men so Inlisted was supplied by the Contractor for the time they were at the Rendezvous, as appears by the Returns of Capt Montfort; that the Contractor also paid the amount of Ensign Polk's subsistence for Eleven months. The probability therefore is, that he received all the Rations due him to the time he left the Rendezvous. no Claims can be admitted on this head. I have settled his Pay for one year agreeably to the enclosed copy of the Account Current, and paid the Balance agreeably to your Power of Attorney to John Steel Esqr & taken his Rect accordingly.

Sir
I this day rec'd your letter of the 7th Ulto, and agreeably to your request have made every search for the Muster & Pay Rolls, but have not been able to ascertain where they are lodged; consequently am not able to give you the information required. — I have enclosed you an Official certificate of your Commission which you was entitled to being deranged on the 3d of Jany 1783, hoping it may answer the purpose as well as a certificate of your subsequent services; however if you can inform me where it will be most probable the information can be obtained, I will attend to it with great pleasure.
