[Received from / [undecipherable]] Pittsburg 28^th December 1796 Sir, By this days post I have received your two letters of the 9^th inst. one of which enclosed 20 post Notes of 100 Doll.^s each. On the 19^th inst I found it necessary to draw on you in favor of Oliver Ormsby for 6 Doll.^s at 8 days sight which be pleased to pay & charge as usual. Ten Minutes after 2 O'Clock P.M. on the 15^th instant at Presqu'isle Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne that faithful Servant of the Utd. resigned his Command in this World [undecipherable] interred at that place [undecipherable] Dr. De Butts one of his Aids de camps together with Major Kirkpatrick who had accompanied the General from Detroit to Presq'isle and attended on him in his last Moments are expected at this place this day or tomorrow. The Winter commencing much earlier this Year than Usual has greatly retarded our Navigation. Two Boats that I Sent off for Fort Washington on the 28^th Nov. Have been stopt about 50 miles below this place one of the Boats wrecked but Cargos all safe the other Boat somewhat Damage - On board of the former was poor Doctor Pfeiffer and Family - a Great Number of Merchant & Family Boats have been either Damaged or lost. Of two large Boats that by a partial opening of the River attempted to proceed, one of them - a Family Boat having a number of Women & Children on board was lost - a few miles below this place yesterday half on board perished.
