War Dep^t / Philadelphia] Pittsburg 30^th December 1796 Sir Your letters of the 16^th & 23^rd instant have both come to hand by post of this day and have same time received a letter from Samuel Lewis dated War Office 23^rd instant enclosing one Post note of twenty five hundred dollars on account of Pay & forage &c of the Troops of the upper Posts and for which be pleased to hand the enclosed Receipt to M^r Lewis. I had intended to transmit a statement of my Receipts & Payments in your department as soon as the several Detachments are paid up to the first of November after which time the Troops are to be mustered & paid by companies. It is therefore necessary that Company Rolls be immediately sent forward.
