[Docketing endorsement, upper left corner: 1796 / [undecipherable] Butler / [undecipherable] 23 [undecipherable] / Ans [undecipherable] same [undecipherable]] [Public Service] — To William C Simmons Esquire Accountant to the War Department Philadelphia [per post] Fort Franklin Dec^r 18^th 1796 Sir, Inclos'd You have the receipt Roll of my Detachment with Vouchers accounting for three hundred and Seventy two Dollars, for the months of June July and August 1796 the amount received from Isaac Craig Deputy Quarter Master General, was three hundred and ninety three Dollars, but in consequence of Serjeant Charles Howe being absent on command, ever Since I received the Money, it was not in My power to pay him, therefore his pay amounting to twenty one Dollars remains in my hands. I wish your instructions respecting it. I think it probable that he was Settled with in Pittsburgh as he was their discharged, of the Service — A long time Since I forwarded you receipt Rolls, containg therein Vouchers for three hundred and ninety nine Dollars, paid a detachment, that I marched from Pittsburgh in June the pay was for the months of March April and May 1796 it was formerly Ensign David Thompsons Detachment, I have never yet had any acknowledgement of the receipt of those Vouchers they were forwarded through Major Craig I Should be glad to know if the were received I am Sir with respects your Very Humble Serv^t R Butler Lieut.
