Lieut Col^o Tho^s Butler Accountant's Office Pittsburg Dec^r 16^th 1796 Sir Agreeably to the request contained in your letter of the 9^th inst. to the Sec^y of War, which was handed to me by him, I now enclose you an extract from the Books of this Office of Capt John Crawford's Accounts — By which you will observe that exclusive of the large sums he has rec^d for the recruiting service, he has large sums to account for remaining in his hands as Pay Mast^r to his Detachment. — The necessity for those balances being refunded, I have fully explained to Capt Crawford; and notwithstanding he promised to balance that account he has never yet complied therewith — should he have received any monies from other quarters than those I have noted, he will state the amount. — I would recommend that he state his account for such sums as he has to account for, and forward that as well as the vouchers to this Office, that a Settlement may take place and the actual balance ascertained.
