It is a long time since I have received any of your accounts. The necessity of them at this time is great from the frequent applications from Members of Congress & others for Information relative to the Army. I hope ere you leave that Country, you will collect the Accounts and Vouchers from such Officers as have monies to account for — there will be a great difficulty in obtaining them after you leave there. — I think the most adviseable plan would be to call on them immediately, and such who have unappropriated monies in their hands, that they forthwith settle their accounts & refund the balance to you in the usual way. Your accounts are under Examination & will be continued until finished, if the other Business of the Office will admit of it — at any rate I will have them so arranged as to create as little difficulty as possible when you attend to the settlement of them. Crawford; and notwithstanding he promised to balance that account he has never yet complied therewith — should he have received any monies from other quarters than those I have noted, he will state the amount. — I would recommend that he state his account for such sums as he has to account for, and forward that as well as the vouchers to this Office, that a Settlement may take place and the actual balance ascertained.
