resume your Duties as Pay Mast^r. — Capt DeBatts has drawn a number of Bills on your account which have been presented here & paid, and charged to your account on account of Pay &c of the Army. This Circumstance I have mentioned to you, as the Bills do not express for what Account they are drawn. In a letter of advice from Capt DeBatts he mentions your ill State of Health, & your incapacity of attending to your Business, which is the reason for his drawing the Bills. By the next Post I will forward you a particular account of the Bills drawn by him, which have been accepted & paid, as well as an extract from the warrant Book in continuation of the one last forwarded to you. I am &c W^m Simmons Acc^t To the Comptroller of the Treasury Accountants Office Dec^r 9^th 1796 Sir I have examined Lieut Edmund Gamble's Claim for Land; it does not appear that he has been returned as entitled to it; upon a reference to the Musters, it appears that he was mustered on the 8^th June 1778 in Capt Francis Childs' Company for the month of May 78, & does not appear upon any subsequent Muster Rolls, it is therefore not known how he left the service, if he was arranged as a Supernumerary Officer, he would have been entitled to Land, but this does not seem to be the case — The State of North Carolina settled with him for his Services & allowed him One year's pay as a Supernumerary Lieutenant in that foot service, also one years pay as a Supernumerary Lieut. of Horse; both of these sums were disallowed to the credit of the State on the settlement by the General Board of Commissioners.
