Pittsburg 2^d December 1796 Sir You will find this accompanied by a Muster and Pay Roll of Cap^ts Crawford's Detachment for August last — the amount thereon 334 Dollars 93 cents also an Account of Lieut. Col^o. Butler's Pay & Forage for July, August & September 1796 Amount paid thereon 261 dollars — Total Two hundred ninety five dollars ninety three cents. Upon examining my account I find that all the monies that have been placed in my Hands for Pay V^ts of the Troops at the upper posts of the Ohio Have already been applied together with a small sum in addition thereto. It is therefore necessary, previous to making any further Payment, that I be enabled by a Remittance, or by your obtaining of the [undecipherable] of the Treasury his order on Gen^l John [undecipherable] for such a sum as you may think necessary — Suppose two Months pay V^ts for the Troops, Say two thousand five hundred dollars, or any further sum that you may think proper — There being now in the Hands of Gen. Atwill a considerable sum of money subject to the Orders of the Secretary of the Treasury which the General wishes drawn out of his Hands — being principally in dollars renders it inconvenient to transmit it to the Treasury.
