Dec.^t] [Enc^d [undecipherable]] William Simmons Esquire Acc^t War Depart^t Philadelphia Pittsburg 2^nd December 1796 Sir You will find this accompanied by a Muster and Pay Roll of Cap^t Crawford's Detachment for August last - the amount thereon 334 Dollars 93 cents also an account of Lieut^t Col^o. Butler's Pay & Forage for July August & September 1796 Amount paid thereon 261 dollars - Total Five hundred Ninety five dollars ninety three cents. Upon examining my account I find that all the Monies that have been placed in my Hands for Pay &^c of the Troops at the upper posts of the Ohio have already been applied together with a small sum in addition thereto. It is therefore necessary, previous to making any further Payment, that I be enabled by a Remittance, or by your obtaining of the [undecipherable: probable reading Secretary] of the Treasury his order on Gen John [undecipherable: probable reading Nevill] for such a sum as you may think necessary - Suppose two Months pay &^c for the Troops, say two thousand five hundred dollars, or any further sum that you may think proper - There being now in the Hands of Gen. Neville a considerable sum of money subject to the Orders of the Secretary of the Treasury which the General wishes drawn out of his Hands - being principally in dollars renders it inconvenient to transmit it to the Treasury.
