War Office December 5. 1796
Sir,
I have seen a letter from you to the Secretary of War dated the 28. Ultimo inclosing your Commission as Surgeons Mate in the Army of the United States.
As it is possible that your having been ordered to Oswego at this Season of the Year may in some degree have induced you to transmit your Commission I take the liberty to inform you that yesterday Col. Rochefontaine was instructed to send you to Governors Island, to attend the Corps at that place.
I hope that this Notice may be so agreeable as to remove your intention of retiring from the Corps. On hearing of your arrival at Governors Island I will forward you your Commission.
I am Sir
Your obedt Servant
