I rec.d your letter of the [undecipherable] Inst accompanied by Pay & Muster Rolls for Sep.t & Oct.r 1796.
You will now receive from Samuel Lewis Clk of the War Office the sum of Sixteen hundred Dollars, which has been deemed a sufficient sum to complete the Pay of your detachment, & that of L.t Bowan's in full for the present year — To your Pay Roll for October amounting to 347 Dollars, 680 Dollars has been added on an Estimate for two months Pay thereof — so as to complete it for the present year — you have a Rec.t Roll thereof for it enclosed to make the Payments by — The Pay & Muster Rolls you will form on Mustering the men for the two subsequent months — and have them taking the proper Receipt Rolls — To L.t Bowan's Pay Roll up to the 31 Oct.r amounting to 598 Dollars there has been 272 Dollars the amount of an Estimate for two months Pay, also added so as to complete their Pay for the present year; making the whole 1800 Dollars — You have a Receipt Roll enclosed for their Pay to 31st Oct.r 1796, & Pay & Muster Rolls will be formed by L.t Bowan for the remaining two months in the present Year, after which you will make the necessary examination, and proceed to pay them accordingly (This as well as the letter containing the money) goes by Post to Fort Stanwick, from which place I have directed the Post Master to forward it to you by Express, and that you would defray the expences thereof on account of the United States.
Your knowledge of Business of this nature makes it useless in cautioning you against errors in the payments — I shall therefore conclude, by requesting that you will by the first safe opportunity forward your Vouchers for such expenditures, as you have made, or may hereafter make, and inform me of any other Mode more safe than the present for remitting you money. — Enclosed you have Blank Pay Muster & Rec.t Rolls
