Your favor of the 1^st instant I had the honor. to receive this day & feel much obliged for the polite punctuality you have paid to mine of the 26^th ulto. — In reply to your request I have to observe that it is true that I rec^d. pay in advance of Mr. Howell for the month of Jan^y. 1793 — but well recollect that Mr. H's acc^t. was forwarded to Head Quarters before my arrival there; & that it was stopped from the first payment w^ch became due to me at Legionville; at w^ch time the relative rank of the medical department not being ascertained we were made up in the muster rolls of the General Staff & rec^d. pay from Mr. Swan the paymaster untill by lot I was arranged to the 3^d Sublegion, when my acc^ts were settled by Mr. [undecipherable] & Lieut [undecipherable]. — Am with great regard & much respect, [To the H^ble [undecipherable] Simmons / acct. has arriv'd] Your very H^ble Serv^t Jo: Gardner Andrews N.B.
