M^cIntosh, in which I communicated Some Ideas, respecting our want of a Consul or Publick Agent, to [strikethrough: and and] endeavour to Protect our Citizens and see that they enjoyed the rights Guaranteed to them by existing Treaties &c. — Since which I had the Honor to receive from the Hon^ble. M^r. Pickering, Secretary of State a letter dated the 10^th of August — Communicating your friendly mention of me, as a fitt Person to act in Such Publick capacity — for which permit me Sir, to return you my Sincere Thanks — this mark of your favour excits in my mind, the most unfeigned Sentiments of Gratitude, and be persuaded, much Honoured Sir, although a novice in diplomatic affairs, no part of my future Conduct Shall ever draw a reproach on you, for your friendly intervention in my favour; but that I Shall attach myself as far as my feeble Capacity will permit, to fulfille [strikethrough: fulfil the] any functions, wherewith I may be Charged — I have written to the Honourable Secretary of State, and mentioned that I had communicated his Ideas on the Business of receiving a Consul to the Executive here, who refer me to the Supreme Commission at the Cape — therefore I must wait Sometime before I can learn the result — however I have understood that M^r.
