Portsmouth October 30^th 1796 To Captain George Hunter, Sir It being [undecipherable] proper to appoint [undecipherable] to make [undecipherable] the Frigate now Building by M^r James Hackett for [undecipherable] of the United States, and Confiding in the report of your [undecipherable] Character and Abilities, have accordingly appointed you a Temporary Inspector of Said Frigate untill the pleasure of the [undecipherable] Secretary of War, to receive Whereon your pay [undecipherable] the 1^st day of [undecipherable] at the rate of 30 Dollars p^r Month. The duty required of you is to visit the Navy Yard daily and to inspect all parts of the Timber and work [undecipherable] on Said Frigate that not any unsuitable or unsound Timber be put in the Same. You are to see the work is performed in a [undecipherable] workmanlike Manner and agreeably to the directions furnished as [undecipherable] may be [undecipherable] by the [undecipherable] Secretary of War. If any part of the Timber is found defective, or the Workmanship not conformable to such directions you are to report the Same to M^r Hackett that the unsound Timber (if any) may be removed or the Workmanship not approved [undecipherable] of the Workmanship. You will also [undecipherable] inspect all the Iron work and other materials received for said Ship. Observe they be properly [undecipherable] & that no [undecipherable] or unnecessary waste be made of any part thereof. If on the prosecution of the Work any difference should arise, or M^r Hackett should refuse to Comply with your request you will as soon as possible acquaint M^r Sheafe the Naval Agent with the Circumstances of such disagreements that the same may be Amicably adjusted as it is expected Harmony & Good order shall go be established between the persons concerned that every part of the business may be fully carried into effect.
