[Missing Page/s — Some or all of the pages of this file are wholly or in part missing, and we have not been able to locate a more complete copy of the document.] I feel myself in a delicate situation with respect to this man — having been very particularly introduced to M^r Volney, at the house of M^r George Clymer, in the City of Philadelphia last Spring in the presence of a numerous & select Company of friends assembled to dine with him as a Gentleman of the first Scientific knowledge, as a practical Philosopher, & having frequently met with him afterwards in many of the first Circles of the City, I cou'd do no less upon his paying me a visit immediately upon his arrival at this place on the Evening of the 23^d Instant, than saying that he had no greater [than] to offer him an accommodation at my table, & a room in a small house occupied by Capt De Bulls, [motion,] which he thankfully accepted, but upon the arrival of the Pay= Master General, three days since he abruptly changed his Quarters to Col^o Hamhrandts, nor have I seen him since; how to account for this Caprice I am at a loss, because his reception & treatment were delicate and hospitable
