James Triplett, Cadet Fort Norfolk Virginia Accountants Office Oct 4^th 1796 Sir I received your Letter of the 26^th ulto. enclosing your Mus^t Roll for August 1796 which has been examined and amounts to twenty nine Dollars & thirteen Cents, which will be placed to your Credit on the Books of this Office. Stephen Rochefontaine West Point New York Accountants Office Oct 5 1796 Sir The necessity for Officers settling their Accounts from the many calls of Soldiers for Arrears of Bounty &c must appear obvious to you. — There are Officers belonging to your Corps who have been repeatedly called upon without effect to make a Settlement. I have therefore to request that you will direct such Officers who are at West Point and who have not complied with my request to forward their accounts & Vouchers without delay to this Office for settlement. Among the Officers called upon was Cap^t Thompson & Lieu^t Dayton; it would be well in every case to call upon Officers to make a Settlement before they are ordered on command — they might be directed to lodge their Accounts & Vouchers with the Pay Master, and refund any Balance appearing due from them. The Account to be subject to a revision & Correction if necessary at this Office. This may be done where Officers are ordered off before they could have time to forward the accounts here and wait the result. Their dispersed situation when on command will make it much more difficult to collect their Accounts, and receive any Balance which they may have in their Hands, than when they are at West Point — Your attention to these objects is particularly requested.
