No 12.] West Point, Sept 7. 1796 Sir, Your favor of the 1^st instant I received yesterday, enclosing the bank note for 75 dollars, & Fitzgeralds receipt for Lieut Freeman. Lieut Freeman has credited me for the 13 dollars, as I have not yet had time to finish the statement of the 756 dollars & 74½ cents he deposited in my hands by your direction. I have paid Mr Cunningham the 28 dollars you sent to me to pay him on a note Col Tousard gave him. I now enclose you said note with a receipt in full on the back of it. The 60 dollars Col Tousard's note to me was for, & the 28 dollars I paid Mr Cunningham, make the 88 dollars. I also enclose you a statement of money you sent to me to pay the artillerists & engineers their May pay, on the back of which is Lieut Freeman's receipt for the balance of 115 dollars that remained in my hands — I delivered to him the vouchers. I likewise enclose you a receipt roll signed by the ordnance detachment for their June pay, amount 65 dollars, and pay rolls for their July & August pay. In the hurry I wrote to you the [undecipherable] time I made mention of the 154 dollars I paid Capt. [undecipherable] & the officers that went with him to the westward — it having slipped my memory, at that time, that you reimbursed me that sum. On my referring afterwards to my Ledger I found it entered. I request to be informed, if I am to disburse money on requisitions of Col Rochefontaine's without my knowing if any estimates have been furnished by him for it & approved of; or, directions from the Secretary of War or yourself. I enclose you two orders from Col. Rochefontaine for teams — I ventured to furnish them. The hauling the timber from the mountain for Lieut Freeman's kitchen (which is to be added to Major Rivardi's late house, Col. Rochefontaine intending two families to occupy said house,) took 2 teams 2¾ days each at 18/ P day. A team is now hauling saplins for the woodyard. I shall immediately finish the statement of the 756 dollars & 74½ cents Lieut Freeman left in my hands, & pay him the residue of the balance.
