[Address wrapper, heavily damaged and largely undecipherable: Sam[uel] Hodgdon Esq[uire], Philadelphia] Pittsburg September 16^th 1796 Sir Your letter of the 10^th instant is received I am infinately obliged to you for your attention to my claim but I am astonished that the Secretary of War delays his assent to it and still more astonished that M^r W^m Simmons or any other Person should oppose it. I have this day drawn on you in favor of George Stevenson for 800 dollars at 8 days sight which be pleased to pay and charge to present Quarterly Estimate A Return of Stores rec^d of the Militia Army was made out and transmitted to the Secretary of War on the 3^d of December 1794 That return pointed out the number of Articles rec^d previous to that date, but the Quality of a greater part of them was not then ascertained, occasioned by their being delivered in the hurry & confusions of the Army's [undecipherable: probable reading Returning] Home. A number of Articles have since been discovered & collected from several places where they had been left by the Militia on their return and it is probable there is still a Quantity of Stores at Fort Cumberland I am led to this opinion by information lately received, but on which I cannot positively depend — but you have it in your power to have an Enquiry made — but if you should think it more proper for me to make the Enquiry and have the several Articles that may be found transported to this post, you will please obtain a special Order from the Sec^y of War directed to me for that purpose.
