[Porge Rec.d 22^d Sep 1796 [undecipherable] ing Encs &] West Point Sep^r 16. 1796 Sir, I have to acknowledge the receipt of M^r. Paynes letter of the 27 of last July and of yours of the 12 ultimo. Captain Ingersoll declined settling his account with me for pay & subsistance, on account of your not allowing him as much pay for his rations as he charges — he tells me he would settle his account with you. Your letter of the 12 ultimo I received the 14 instant, on my return from Albany. I have made out a state=ment of the Detachment's pay, balance due to Absentes one hundred & 15 dollars — I am now making out a statement of the 155 dollars & 71½ cents Lieut. Freeman left in my hands at the time he went on furlough — the balance remaining in my hands of this last statement I suppose is about at a rough guess, two hundred & 30 dollars. I paid Capt Bruff and the other Officers [strikethrough: [undecipherable]], with him to the westward last June about 154 dollars — their receipts I forwarded to you some time ago. I suppose by your letter of the 12 ultimo, this money is not to be included in the statement of money I received from Lieut. Freeman. The list of absentees which Lieut. Freeman says he thinks he left with Col. Rochefontaine for me, was mislaid — I did not receive a copy of it until Lieut. Freeman's return from furlough. We concluded it was best for him to take it again & and pay the men — he says very few men are here whose names are in it. Captain Frye informed me, prior to M^r. Freeman's return, that he was included in said list for his March pay — on which I paid him. I beg leave to trouble you enclosed with a note of hand Col. Pousard gave me for fifty dollars — he promised me to have the money with you for me, and take up his note. I enclose a printer's account Col. Rochefontaine handed to me to forward to you.
