Unable to Locate Joseph Matthews, Etc.
Document 1796Among a number of other business matters, Manning [of contractors Manning & Wychoff] notes that they have directed their agent John Barnes to pay Hodgdon the amount of the first bill. However, they have not been able to locate Joseph Matthews although they have ascertained that he in port having discharged part of his cargo above the shipyards previous to this morning's sail.

Your favr. of 18th. came to hand
during the absence of both of us in the Country, the Bills however were presented and accepted by Mefs. Latting & Deal on the 22 Inst, tho Billed 10 days sight will fall due the 1st. & payable 3 Sept. we shall have some Acck. soon to be pafsed the public offices when we shall direct M. John Barnes our Agent to pay you the amt. of the first Bill–We enclose you your letter, to Joseph Matthews, whom we were not able to find, we afsertained his being in port, having discharged part of his Cargo above the ship yards & halled off into the stream previous to his making sail_We left word at Coll Stevens' Store that we had a letter for him, he was expected to be there before he sailed, since which we have not heard of him, hope he arrived in good time at your place-The cloathing for Capt Miller mentioned in your letter of the 3 Inst came duly to hand & were forwarded forth with to middltown-
