[undecipherable] Jan^y 2. 16.] Taunton August 27^th 1796 Sir I now enclose you my Recruiting and Muster Rolls for 1795. and I owe you an Appology for not forwarding them sooner — my ill state of health has been the chief cause of their delay. I had recruited a Great part of my men before I received instructions for taking certificates from Magistrates of the recruit being able bodied &c. I have, however, procured such for all except James Mefs, who was inlisted & sworen one hundred Miles from this place, and has since deserted. Therefore can only say, that he was a Nery likely active young man. The Muster Roll you forwarded me for the pay of my men to the 31^st August, did not come to hand until the payment was made, and the men dispersed Recruiting. That to October 31^st was not received until after my men were embarked. I hope those taken will answer the purpose. In some instances, my Accounts &Vouchers may not be as Sufficiently Authenticated as the nature of the case Requires, yet, they are as much so, as circumstances will now admit of. Any deficiency that may appear please inform me of it, and if better Testimony can be got, I will forward it.
