Pittsburg, 19th Augt. 1795
Sir,
Your letter of the 12th instant, enclosing 577 dollars 50 cents in post Notes is received.
I have this day transmitted, addressed to you under Cover to the Secretary at War four packets containing Vouchers of Issues at this post. No 1. Contains Invoices of Stores [undecipherable]. No 2. Contains vouchers of Issues of Forage & Hospital Sto[res]. No 3. Contains Vouchers of Issues of Qr Mas Ordnance Stores and Cloathing Viz. No 4. Contains a General Return of Qr Mr Hospital Ordnance Stores - Cloathing & Indian Goods &c during one year commencing 1st April 1795 ending 31 March 1796 inclusive. The return is accompanied by abstracts of Receipts and Issues of Stores in the several Departments during that period — These abstracts have occasioned (you will observe) a great deal of labor but if they will (as they are intended) assist in the adjustment of the public accounts I shall not regret the trouble they have
occasioned. But I shall expect that hereafter General Returns of Stores & Vouchers of Issues is all that need be required —
You will no doubt observe that the Stores are badly [undecipherable] — this was occasioned by adopting in haste a method pointed out by Colo. O'Hara, by which you will see that Articles without affinity in Name or Nature are classed together. I presume a great deal of pains has been taken in digesting, arranging and classing the Stores in your Office and will wish to adopt the best method. I have to request you if possible to send a copy of your mode of classing the several Articles in the different Departments and which I shall hereafter adopt and pursue.
I have a quarterly to your intimation informed the Secretary of War that I have empowered you to make any adjustment with him of my claim of Compensation for extra Services in the Ordnance & Cloathing Departments &c.
You will find enclosed Genl. St. Clair's Draft on the Cashier of the Bank of the U. S. in my favor for 313 [undecipherable] pay able on the 5th of October next — Be pleased to have this Draft accepted if possible by George Simpson the first time you are at the Bank.
Sam. Sir,
