[William Simmons Esq^r] [E^ns Charles Mathis 2^d Sub Legion Fort Le Bœuf Penn. rec. 2^d September [179]6 ans^d — [underline: same day]] Fort Le Bœuf August 18^th 1796— Sir under Cover is my Receipt Rolls for five Months pay for my Detachment, (money Drawn from Major Isaac [undecipherable]) together with a Receipt Rolls for the remainder of Bounty for my Men wich you will please to have examined, and place to the credit of my Account— There remains in my hands some of the money owing to deaths and Desertions of wich I have made a remark at the Bottom of the Rolls. — In your letter of the 14^th of May you were pleased to mention my having made a statement of bounty due to William [undecipherable], discharged at Pittsburgh in April 1795 by Colonel Butler— but as he reenlisted on the 8^th of June following at Carlisle (he having served his full time) intitles him to Sixteen dollars Bounty as stated in my Account — A line Sir by the Return of [undecipherable] announcing the Receipt of the enclosed will much oblige your very humble Servant Charles Mathis E^ns 2^d Sub Legion [undecipherable] at Fort LeBœuf No News in this Quarter Particular, our Detachments are busily engaged, erecting a new Fort at this place, and bridging of a road from LeBœuf to Presqu'Isle, fifteen Miles and a half distant Wille^m Simmons Esq^r Accountant
