If I am to be in the arreas of my pay and Subsistence in consequence of these differences of Opinion respecting the Laws for Officers in their accounts with the public. I should be glad to know, & if you can inform me how I am to subsist as an Officer — I received on my acc^t of subsistence [undecipherable] for [undecipherable] directed for the purpose of payment — agreeably attested to the order of the acc^t Office & they are made up agreeably to the Law wherein it is express'd that all Officers shall be entitled to Rations or money in lieu thereof at the [undecipherable: probable reading "contract"] price where they may become due they and are made on the spirit and letter of that Law, and I presume that is made in the form and order now practised in the Army of the U.States. and which has been acceptable in the acc^t Office — A compromise between me and the accountant respecting my just demands on the public is a piece of business I cannot think myself authorised to accept. — My demands from the U.States are no more then just; and by an inquiry of the [undecipherable: probable reading "Secretary"] of the Treasury who made the Contract for the Supply's of Boston they will be found so — and by which I have been governed by while at that place — If my services in the Western Army has entitled me the indulgence of [undecipherable] my subsistence in future all furloughs are to be considered as of [undecipherable] time. and the forces of the U.States in the Army will not be worth excepting — Capt Fleming would have made payment of my acc^t if I would except, (at the rate) of 15 cents [undecipherable: probable reading "per"] Ration since I left the Army.
