Pittsburg, 5th August 1796
Sir
Returned from Presqu'Isle last evening & found here on my absence your letters of the 16 & 21st ultimo. This has been written by Mr Bates the former enclosing ten bank notes of one hundred dollars each and the letter respecting the period of the vouchers upon the authority of the [Mover?] 2d U.G. — Previous to my setting out to Fort Franklin & Presque & Presqu'isle my accounts of Expenditures at this post were made up to the beginning of July, and my next to those posts had in view a settlement of accounts generally in the S.W. Dept up to that period, in order to have them added to my Disbursements Enclosed in my abstract which I intended to have transmitted by this post, but in order to separate the Expenditures of the first Instn. Viz. up to the first of April it is necessary to postpone a transmission of my accounts until next post.
Your letter of the 29th ultimo is this day come to hand enclosing one thousand dollars in ten post notes of 100 dollars each. — I presume a multiplicity of business has prevented you from obtaining the Secretary of War's Determination on my claim for extra Services in the cloathing business Department, although I have no apprehensions of neglect on your part, yet such is a matter of importance to me I am anxious for a decision.
I am with Sentiments of great Esteem
