[James Craig Muster & Pay Rolls 14^th 12^th [undecipherable] Ano 1795 1796] [52] Sir, Pittsburg 4^th August 1796 This letter from your Office of the 23^d July was received by the last post in my absence. With respect to the Nation charged in James Butlers Account — the Premmitte price is 22½ Cents exclusive of the additional allotment of two ounces of Meat & Flour, who amounts the Nation to the Sum charged — And, if necessary he will yet attest to his account liften a Magistrate. I Ephraim West — With reference to the calculation mode of paying the rations of Soldiers particularly circumistances to that was, I cannot perceive why an Account specially certified should be better before valued than a General Muster Roll — This also has been the mode hitherto persued at this Post — And I believe by Late General the Pay Master general. Jacob Brown — has Mustered & paid for the months of November & December 1795 with a Detachment of men lately assigned this Ohio with Cap^t. The Tewis — It was presented at that time, his muster have accumulated this Ohio with foul Tongue and have attained a settlement at Head Quarters has being entered another Route, it became essential to pay him, I therefore state it on what I thought the best authority I could Attest. John Taylor Sargeant — As to the general Rule of not allowing both premium & rations to Soldiers who apprehend Deserters, I can only say that it has been committed at this Post — particularly in the accounts of Capt. Jos. Burbeck — Muster & Pay Rolls of several Detachments at the upper posts on the Ohio accompany this letter. The Account thereon appears to be Eleven hundred & Ninety five Dollars, Seventy eight Cents, as per current Estimate, which sum be pleased to place to my account.
