[Docket: Isaac Craig / Pittsburg Aug. 5. 1796 / Ans. [undecipherable] 13 / 1796] Sir, Pittsburg 5^th August 1796. The letter from your Office of the 23^d July was received by the last post in my absence. With respect to the Ration charged in Lieut Poulter's Account - the Greenville price is 22 7/8 Cents exclusive of the additional allowance of two Ounces of Meat & Flour, which amounts the ration to the Sum charged. — and if necessary he will yet attest to his Account before a Magistrate. — Ephraim Kent — With deference to the established mode of paying the arrears of Soldiers particularly circumstanced as that was, I cannot perceive why an Account specially certified should be held less valid than a General Muster Roll. — This also has been the mode heretofore pursued at this Post. — And I believe by Colo Swann the Pay Master General. Jacob Boam — Was Mustered & paid for the months of November & December 1795 with a Detachment of men which ascended the Ohio with Cap^t. Tho. Lewis — It was presumed at that time he would have descended the Ohio with Gen^t Wayne and have obtained a settlement at Head-Quarters but being ordered another Route, It became essential to pay them, & I therefore did it on what I thought the best authority I could obtain. John Taylor Sergeant — As to the general Rule of not allowing both premium & Expenses to Soldiers who apprehend Deserters, I can only say that it has been admitted at this Post. — particularly in the Accounts of Serg^t. Geo. Wahab. — Muster & Pay Rolls of several Detachments at the upper posts on the Ohio accompany this letter, the Amount paid thereon appears to be Eleven hundred & Seventy five Dollars, Seventy eight cents, as per enclosed Schedule, which sum be pleased to place to my credit.
