July 1790 — Copy — N^o. 3] [Copy] Fort Knox 25^th July 179[6] Sir Permit me the honor of congratulating your Excellency on your safe, and happy arrival at the army, and of acknowledging the receipt of your favor of the 10^th Inst. by Lieutenant Taylor who arrived here the 23^d. Circumstances as the business therein mentioned, stand at this time, it is the opinion of Lieutenant Taylor, and myself, that he should proceed without loss of time to your Excellency with the papers herewith enclosed, which fell into my hands yesterday. Every further exertion shall be made use of, with the greatest caution and secrecy; for further particulars I beg leave to refer you to Lieutenant Taylor, who can inform your Excellency of my expectation on the return of Lamotte from Kaskaskias. There has a certain well known Lormis passed this place about the 6^th Inst. on his way, I am informed, through the Indian Country; his business is, I believe, to poison the minds of the savages. For particulars of my information, Lieutenant Taylor will inform your Excellency of. One report says, Lormis is to visit the upper garrisons and Detroit, and another says he is to return to this place soon. I shall pay attention to him. During your Excellency's absence from the Army, I had the honor of writing you four times, dated the 20 January, 5 & 23^d of March and 26^th of May, all of which I hope came safe to hand. I am informed that Peter Janin, missionary from the United States to the Kaskaskia tribe of Indians, has actually deserted, by leaving the Territory and entering in to Spanish service; I shall receive the particulars of the subject by the return of Lamotte, when I shall communicate them to your Excellency. Missionary Rivet at this place, informs me he has had an offer from the Spanish Government to enter their service, to which he has paid no attention. I have the honor herewith to enclose Returns of Ordnance, Garrison, provision & Clothing — the Quartermaster not having his ready at this moment, prevents me forwarding that till the next opportunity; Muster Rolls accompanies this up to the 8^th Inst.
