If this account had been presented at this office the officer would have been obliged to produce a certificate from the Pay Master, showing the date he was last paid to, and if he had omitted getting one — he would then have been required to attest to his accounts before a magistrate — The Contract price of rations at Greenville is but 22½ cents and you have allowed 24½ Ephraim Kent — When a soldier applies for any arrears of pay he should be mustered and made up in the pay roll of the Detachment to which he belongs and a remark made opposite his name of the circumstances relative thereto. Jacob Beam: Why is his pay not made up for November and December — if he has been paid on any roll for those months he should have been made up for the whole amount due him — The account should have been certified by his Commanding Officer who had a knowledge of the amount of pay due him. This would have been required had the accounts been settled here. John Taylor Serg^t It has been an uniform rule here in the settlement of accounts of this nature not to allow any soldier, the premium for apprehending a Deserter if his expenses have been paid by the Public, either the Premium or the Expenses are deducted as the man is receiving pay from the Public for the time he is in pursuit — which is not the case with any other person. Captain Crawford has been repeatedly requested to settle his accounts which he has never yet complied with — The enclosed letter you will please to deliver to him — he is again reminded thereof — if he does not now comply you will stop making any further payments to him for pay or debts?
